- Make ready 1/2 cup split red gram/Toor dal
- Prepare 1/2 cup split red lentils/masoor dal
- Prepare 1/4 cup split green gram/moong dal
- Prepare 1/4 cup bengal gram/chanadal
- Make ready 1/2 tsp Asafoetida
- Get 1 tsp turmeric powder

- Take 1 cup chopped onions
- Make ready 1/2 cup tomatoes
- Make ready 3-4 green chillies
- Take 2 tsp red chilli powder
- Take 1/2 tsp Jeera powder
- Make ready 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
- Take 1/2 cup coriander leaves
- Get 1/2 cup mint leaves
- Get 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Take 3 tsp oil
- Take As required Salt
- Take 1 inch cinnamon
- Take 1 tsp Pepper corns
- Make ready 3-4 cloves
- Prepare 1 bay leaf
- Make ready 200 gms chicken
When the veggies are ready, mix in the dal, sambar powder, tamarind paste and mix until well blended. Lemon juice can be substituted for tamarind. Adjust seasonings, and the final step would be to prepare the tempering or baghar. You can also use Moong Dal or Masoor Dal.
Instructions to make Mixed dal chicken sambar:
- Add all the lentils and dals to a pressure cooker. Add turmeric, asafoetida and water to it and cook for about 3 whistles. Once cooled, blend the dal and keep aside.
- Now in a pan add oil, once oil is hot, add all dry garam masala, then onions, once onions are translucent add tomatoes, then add all dry masala and cook until raw fragrance is mild. Then add chicken and cook for about 5mins. Add water or add extra water that's available in cooked dal.
- Close the lid and cook for about 10 mins. Add chopped mint and coriander leaves. Now add the masala to cooked dal and bring to boil. Add required salt and turnoff from flame. Finally, add lemon juice and serve hot with rice or any rotis.
- Note: Add any lentils as per your taste. The lentils which I have added give good flavor when it's cooked with meat. You can do the same mutton as well.
Adjust seasonings, and the final step would be to prepare the tempering or baghar. You can also use Moong Dal or Masoor Dal. A mix of any of these dals also works great. In some Sambar recipes, even black eyed beans (lobia, chawli) and whole moong beans are used. Take chicken, chilli, tomato, curry leaves, salt, turmeric and water in a sauce pan.
